We hope that Slack will provide us with the tools to stay connected not only during the GLEON virtual all-hands meeting, but also beyond the end of the meeting. However, please use this sparingly notifications can pile up quickly! When making an important announcement, use or so that people will receive a notification.Example: If you have a technical support question, do not ask the question in the #general channel, ask the question in the #technical-support channel. Use the channels as they are intended (each channel has a channel-description).If you only need to communicate with one person, use the direct message feature. Remember that everyone within a channel will be able to view your messages. This can help with the flow of messages within a channel. Instead, you can write short messages or replies. You do not need to bring your email writing style to Slack. Please consider following these tips while collaborating within the GLEON Slack workspace. Within the details page, you can also find more helpful information like who is in the channel and what files have been uploaded to this channel. A Details page will open and after selecting More you can either change notifications or mute the channel. You can also change notifications for each channel by clicking on the information icon in the top right corner of the channel. You can customize how you receive all notifications in Slack by clicking on your profile in the top right corner and then selecting Preferences. How do I interact with messages? And what are Threads? Lastly, if you want to chat with someone one-on-one, you can use the Direct messages drop down to send instant messages (see the video below for more details on using channels and direct messages). When making a channel request please include 1) the new-channel name and 2) a list of participants to be added to the channel. If you would like a channel to be added for your working group, ad-hoc group, or coffee house chat…etc., you may request the channel in the # technical-support channel. For organizational purposes, the GLEON workspace limits who can add public channels. Other channels can be added to a workspace, changed to private (which means that only people invited to that channel can view it), or renamed, depending on your needs. For instance, the # general channel is for workspace-wide communication and announcements for GLEON. Within each workspace, you will find channels, which are organized by topic and provide a space to chat about things related to that topic. You can have multiple workspaces, such as one for your lab group or one for a research network (like GLEON!). “GLEON” at the top of the page designates the Workspace that you are currently in. You should now see something like this (image taken from the online version). I like to use the desktop app, because I can more easily receive notifications, but it is up to you to decide which method works best for you! After you have created an account (or logged into your existing account), you can access the GLEON workspace by accepting an invitation. There are two ways that you can use slack, either via the desktop app (download for mac or windows) or online. The GLEON all-hands meetings are known for their interactive and collaborative nature, and we hope that Slack will provide the tools necessary to maintain this level of interaction for our upcoming virtual meeting and beyond. We have chosen to use Slack to ease some of these challenges, like communicating with our working groups while residing in different time zones or sharing updates with all of the meeting attendees. Slack is very user-friendly, and you will quickly learn how to utilize the many amazing features that it has to offer! You can find the link to a “How-to” video at the bottom of this post, courtesy of GLEON’s own Abigail Lewis!Īttending a virtual conference has many challenges. If you have never used Slack before, do not be discouraged. Slack allows you to quickly chat with other people and share information, without the hassle of searching through your emails to find what you are looking for. Unlike emails, which can quickly become disorganized and overwhelming, Slack provides a uniform space that is subdivided into various topics (channels) and viewable by unique groups of individuals (workspaces). It is a place for instant messaging, uploading files, and staying in touch. What is Slack? And why did we choose to use it? For the GLEON 21.5 virtual meeting and beyond.
